2016’s GLC-Class is a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz-GLK. However, it doesn’t share many similarities with its predecessor. This is a complete redesign that also presents UK buyers with their first chance of owning a car like this. The GLK was never released in a right-hand drive format, so it’s been a long time coming for those who drive on the alternate side of the road. Finally, Mercedes has a rival to other brands like Audi and BMW that had an advantage for so many years.
Let’s start with performance. First off, this isn’t the most powerful model on the market. It certainly can handle a bumpy drive now and again, but it’s not the best option for this sort of thing. Driving on the roads is a calm, smooth experience. You’ll be looking at doing 0-60mph in just over seven seconds in the most powerful version. Speaking of the most powerful version; you’re not really going to need it. The standard is perfectly fine for most people’s needs and doesn’t suffer greatly from the lack of extra oomph. The mercedes tyres come in the form of 17-inch alloys that help to reduce road noise. There are LED daytime lighting outside the car too.
Inside the car, you’re going to start enjoying the luxurious benefits of owning a Mercedes. No matter what model you choose to go for, you’ll get tinted windows, Bluetooth and a reversing camera included. In some of the sportier models, there’s a built-in Garmin sat nav included. That’s a particularly nice luxury to have, as is the incredibly comfy heated seats. You can choose to upgrade your package to include other extras like keyless entry, but it’s not really worth it. Stick with the sportier model package if you like the sound of it, as you’ll enjoy what it has to offer.
Roominess is one of the defining elements of a Mercedes, and there’s plenty of it here. There’s lots of space for storing things in the doors and a nicely-sized glove compartment. There’s room to stretch your legs out in the passenger seat as well as the back, so you shouldn’t get too cramped in this vehicle. The boot has lots of space for storage and should be big enough for anything you need. It measures at 550 litres of space.

As nice as this car might be, you need to know whether it’s safe. One thing’s for sure; there are loads of gadgets available to improve safety as much as possible. We’ve already mentioned the basics like parking assists and reverse cameras. There’s also Collision Prevention and Crosswind Assist, among others. The Euro NCAP rated the Mercedes GLC with a perfect five-star rating for safety. They tested the 220d version, scoring an incredible 95% rating for safety in adults. Children came just behind at 89%, but that’s still a fantastic rating. Make no mistake about it, this is a car that has pulled out all the stops to make sure it’s a safe option.
In terms of getting the most out your petrol or diesel, you’re not going to wrong here either. The quoted figure for both diesel versions is 56.5mpg. That’s a fantastically high number, so it’s easy to go a long way off a full tank of diesel. Road tax should not be an issue either, as the car doesn’t emit much CO2 at all. The running costs of the Mercedes GLC are very low, and you’ll save a lot of money in the long run over your old vehicle.
So, we move on to the price. Well, it’s not the cheapest vehicle out there, but you get a lot of car for your money. You’re looking at paying up to $40,000 for the GLC in the U.S, and about £35,000 in the UK. All models come with three years/unlimited mileage warranty to cover you for any unwanted surprises. As previously mentioned, you can pay a little extra for more power or upgraded features. I wouldn’t recommend doing that unless you’re really bothered, or you’ve got money to throw away.
The biggest question is: is it worth it? For a car this smooth, elegant and fun to drive, I have to say that it is. It comes packed with great features and doesn’t fail in any areas. It’s one of the safest cars on the market according to ratings, and it can save you a great deal of money in the long run. Only you will be able to decide whether it’s your kind of car, but I’m giving this one a thumbs up.
